Teaching Stress Management to Others: A Rewarding Career

If you are pursuing a career in psychotherapy or life coaching, you will someday be teaching stress management techniques. The people who come to you for help will often be suffering from the damaging effects of chronic stress. You will help them deal with the stress in their lives by teaching them more about stress, how it affects the body and mind and how to effectively deal with it. This is a very rewarding job to have because you are teaching valuable skills that can help people for the rest of their lives.

The first step is to choose your course of education. If you want to become a clinical psychologist or therapist, you will need a college education. If you want to become a certified life coach there are courses you can take. Many of them can be completed online, which is very convenient for adults who are already working a full time job and working on changing careers. Distance learning is offered by a variety of accredited schools and organizations around the globe. Whether you choose psychology or life coaching as your path, teaching the art of stress management will be an important part of your job.

You may teach your clients various techniques to stop stress in its tracks, such as deep breathing exercises and body relaxation techniques. You may also teach them ways to deal with stress on a long term basis, such as learning to be assertive when dealing with others and taking enough time for themselves. Many people suffering from stress don't pay attention to their wants and needs, which is often a contributing factor to their discomfort. Stress is a real problem that causes real mental and physical issues but can be avoided or reduced.

Part of your training before teaching stress management to others is learning to manage the stress in your own life. You must learn the techniques you will be teaching and use them in your own life. No one is immune to stress, not even those who teach others how to combat it. When you become an expert at dealing with your own stress, you become a more effective teacher and a living example of good stress management.
